Selecting the right flooring for a New Brunswick basement requires careful consideration of moisture, temperature, and the unique conditions of below-grade concrete slabs. Unlike upper floors, basement floors sit directly on or near the water table, and in NB's Maritime climate, moisture vapour continuously migrates upward through the concrete. Choosing the wrong flooring material leads to buckling, mold, adhesive failure, and costly replacement within just a few years.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) has become the most popular basement flooring choice in New Brunswick because it is fully waterproof, comfortable underfoot, available in realistic wood-look finishes, and affordable at $4 to $8 per square foot installed. Engineered hardwood can work in dry basements with a proper subfloor system but carries more risk and higher cost at $8 to $15 per square foot installed.

Ceramic or porcelain tile is an excellent waterproof option for basement bathrooms, laundry areas, and utility zones, typically running $6 to $12 per square foot installed. Epoxy floor coatings are ideal for workshop, gym, or utility areas and cost $4 to $10 per square foot. Carpet, while warm and comfortable, is generally discouraged for NB basements unless installed over a moisture-barrier subfloor system, because trapped moisture beneath carpet promotes mold and odour.

Before any flooring goes down, the concrete slab should be tested for moisture using a calcium chloride test or relative humidity probe. If moisture levels are high, a dimpled subfloor membrane or sealed underlayment system is essential. Cracks and unevenness in the slab should be repaired with self-levelling compound before installation.

For a typical New Brunswick basement of 600 to 1,000 square feet, expect to invest $3,000 to $12,000 for flooring including materials, subfloor preparation, and professional installation. The lower end covers basic LVP over a smooth slab, while the upper range includes premium materials, extensive slab prep, and subfloor membrane systems.
